Abstract
Purpose: To estimate appropriate volume of short term and long term storage device in electronic medical recording, which have influence on installation cost and design.

Materials and Methods: The number of variable imaging studies was quote from one year statistics data from university hospital with 600 beds The annual outpatient number is 545,000 and the number of inpatient is 198,000. The studies which product medical images include radiological images in PACS, endoscopic images, pathologic images, laboratory images. Total annual data volume of medical images is calculated by real radiologic images in PACS plus virtual volume of non-radiologic images.

Results: Radiologic studies in PACS were performed 412,971, including 335,347 CR; 26,993 ultrasonogram; 20,294 CT; 6,964 MRI; Endoscopic studies is 9455, The number of laboratory recording such as ECG is 16052, EEG and EMG is 4,726. The number of pathologic studies is 4,495. The total real size of PACS images in long term archive is 1,479GB and 350 GB for short term storage for 2 weeks. The virtual annual volume of endoscopic images is 22.7 GB, 57.0 GB in laboratory images, and 94.4 GB in pathologic images of non PACS images.

Conclusion: For the EMR hospital with 600 beds, The storage space for medical image data is 2000 GB for a year at least.
